Leigh Centurions 24-16 St Helens

Leigh Centurions v Wakefield Trinity

Report

Leigh Centurions registered their first points of the 2017 Super League season after beating St Helens at Leigh Sports Village on Friday.

Tries from Atelea Vea, Gareth Hock and Jamie Acton put Leigh 18-4 up at the break, with Saints’ only first-half try an acrobatic effort from Adam Swift.

Second-half scores from James Roby and Alex Walmsley gave Saints hope, but Micky Higham’s try ensured Leigh’s first Super League win over Saints.

The home side opened the scoring in the ninth minute. The ball went right and Vea burst through a tackle to score against his old club. Ben Reynolds added the extras, 6-0.

Three minutes later and Leigh had extended their lead. Hock powered through the middle to score off a Higham pass. The try was converted from bang in front by Reynolds, 12-0.

Ryan Morgan thought he had scored for the visitors, but St Helens were penalised for crossing. From the penalty Leigh kept it alive, and Acton strolled through a massive gap to score on 31 minutes. Reynolds converted, 18-0.

Saints got on the board through an acrobatic Swift try scored in the 36th minute. The resulting conversion by Mark Percival was missed, 18-4.

Saints thought they had scored their second of the evening moments later when Roby got over the line but he was held up.

Saints’ second came in the 56th minute. It had been all the visitors in the second half, and Roby scooted in under the posts. Percival added the extras, 18-10.

Leigh’s fourth try of the evening was scored in the 67th minute, Higham flying over from dummy half. Reynolds converted, 24-10.

However, Saints clawed back another try four minutes later through Alex Walmsley. Percival’s conversion was successful, 24-16.

Leigh’s James Green was shown a yellow card by Ben Thaler two minutes from the end.

Leigh hung on to beat Saints for their first Super League win since returning to Britain’s top-flight competition after a 12-year absence.
