Leigh Centurions 14-17 Leeds Rhinos

Report

Leeds Rhinos secured their first points of the 2017 Super League season as they cancelled out two early tries from Leigh Centurions to earn a hard fought victory at the Leigh Sports Village.

Leigh had hoped to improve from last week’s defeat to the Castleford Tigers and gain a win in their first home game back in Super League, but they narrowly missed out on the result.

The Centurions produced a magnificent second half performance, but could not find the finishing touch to take their first Super League victory of 2017.

Matty Dawson and Mitch Brown scored a try each in the opening eight minutes. But scores from Adam Cuthbertson, Ryan Hall and Jimmy Keinhorst ensured the victory for Leeds, despite a late try from Ben Crooks putting the pressure on the Yorkshire side.

An error strewn first half from Leigh gave Leeds the edge with an 8-15 lead going into half time.

The Centurions had posted a perfect opening ten minutes, with tries from Dawson and full-back Brown putting the Lancashire side firmly in the driving seat, but the Rhinos hit back with two tries in two minutes.

Leeds’ hooker Matt Parcell showed his talent as he turned creator for both tries. A quick pass to Cuthbertson enabled the latter to crash over from close range and a break from Ablett gave the Rhinos field position for Hall to cross the whitewash in the left hand corner.

Leeds then showed their dominance as consistent penalties gifted the Rhinos field position.

A high tackle on Rob Burrow allowed Cuthbertson to break through the Centurions’ defence. Keinhorst then gave Leeds an 8-14 lead, and Sutcliffe scored an impressive drop goal on the stroke of half time to give the Rhinos an extra cushion.

Despite a 55th minute sin bin for Leigh’s Jamie Acton, the Centurions did well to concede only two points in his time off the field, as Sutcliffe slotted the ball through the posts after another penalty went their way.

Neat footwork from centre Crooks saw him skip easily through a weak Leeds defence in the 68th minute to set up a grandstand finish, putting the Centurions within three points of a draw.

Leeds fans must have been on the edge of their seats as Leigh dominated the last 20 minutes of the game, but to the home fans dismay, could not find a winning try.

Although it was not the result Leigh wanted, they will take the positives into their next game after an incredible fight back in the second half.
