Leeds Rhinos 20-14 Salford Red Devils

Report

Liam Sutcliffe scored a controversial try in the last minute as Leeds defeated Salford 20-14 at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

Logan Tomkins late try looked to have rescued a point for the Red Devils, but the Rhinos struck in the dying moments as Burrow’s dubious pass put Sutcliffe in for the win.

Both teams also missed penalty goals with the score at 14 all in the final 10 minutes in what was a nail-biting finish at the home of the seven-time Super League champions.

Leeds opened the scoring 10 minutes in as Ryan Hall jumped highest to claim a beautifully disguised cross-field kick from Danny McGuire.

The lead lasted just seven minutes as Gareth O’Brien picked up where he left off against Huddersfield using his pace to go through a gap in the Rhinos defence.

A Rob Burrow penalty edged the hosts 6-4 in front but the Red Devils would go into half-time ahead as stand-off Robert Lui made the break before putting Kris Welham in to score.

O’Brien was unable to convert but the visitors went in 8-6 and had their eyes on a rare win at Headingley.

Brian McDermott’s men hit the front again early in the second period, centre Jimmy Keinhorst finishing off a great move after the hard work was done by Matt Parcell and McGuire.

Burrow converted the try and then kicked a straight-forward penalty four minutes later to give the Rhinos a 14-8 lead early in the second half.

The hosts never looked comfortable with only a one-score lead and they were punished for not building on it in the final quarter as Logan Tomkins scored under the posts. O’Brien converted to make it 14-14 with 10 minutes to play.

Both teams had chances to kick penalty goals, but both Burrow and O’Brien missed and it looked like there wouldn’t be a winner.

However, with seconds to play, Liam Sutcliffe took what looked like a forward pass from Burrow to go in for the winning try. Burrow’s conversion made the final score 20-14 to the jubilation of the home crowd.
