Leeds Rhinos 10-7 Hull FC

Report

The penultimate round of the regular season saw Leeds take on Hull with the Rhinos looking to continue a rich vein of form following a convincing 50-24 victory over Salford.

Meanwhile, the Airlie Birds were looking to recover from two consecutive defeats after a 19-12 loss against St Helens a week ago.

The away side scored the opening try after Danny Houghton went close as he scooted towards the line, FC wouldn’t be denied though as Scott Taylor barged his way over moments later (7), Marc Sneyd adding the extras to make it 0-6.

That would be the last try of the half as both sides battled for field position, Marc Sneyd and Danny McGuire trading kicks in an end-to-end game.

The half ended with a Sneyd drop-goal to make it 0-7 (39) as the half-time hooter sounded.

Leeds responded early in the second period as Ryan Hall weaved his way over the line after a bout of pressure on Hull’s line (46), Ashton Golding pulling the conversion wide as Leeds closed the deficit to 4-7.

The Black and Whites had a chance to quickly respond as Sneyd fired a ball out wide to Fetuli Talanoa, who was unable to collect the ball as he spurned a big chance for the away side.

Leeds were quick to punish Hull as a clever kick by Joel Moon was pounced on by young Jack Walker (58), Jordan Lilley from the interchange adding the extras to edge the Rhinos ahead 10-7.

Both sides continued to battle for supremacy and Hull thought they had replied as Josh Griffin dived for the corner but was adjudged to be in touch.

The visitors continued to press and Mahe Fonua thought he had scored minutes later, only for his effort to be also ruled out.

Pressure continued and Hull broke away upfield in the dying minutes of the game but a last-ditch tackle by the returning Jimmy Keinhorst allowed Leeds to hang onto victory and secure second place in the Super League.
