Hull FC 22-26 Leigh Centurions

Report

Round 15 of the Betfred Super League saw Hull FC take on Leigh Centurions on a sunny evening at the KCOM Stadium.

Both sides were looking to bounce back after defeats to St Helens and Salford Red Devils respectively at the Magic Weekend.

The away side took an early lead as Liam Hood unleashed a clever dummy, finding Matty Dawson out wide to score on the right (7), Ben Reynolds missing the conversion: 0-4.

Hull had a chance to respond after a succession of penalties but Nick Rawsthorne failed to collect a ball on the wing from Jamie Shaul for a certain try.

The Airlie Birds wouldn’t be denied though and after a sweeping move out wide, the ball fell to Shaul again, who threw a neat dummy to speed over from close range (20), Marc Sneyd unable to convert leaving the score tied at 4-4.

The Centurions quickly struck back as Matty Dawson acrobatically dived in again, exploiting space on young Rawsthorne’s wing to score (24), Reynolds missing the kick: 4-8.

A towering kick by Sneyd almost found Steve Michaels on the half-hour mark but he was adjudged to have knocked on as he touched down.

In an error-strewn half, a clever kick from Josh Drinkwater was knocked on my Shaul, allowing Atelea Vea to pounce (36), Reynolds adding the extras under the sticks: 4-14.

FC continued to battle though and Carlos Tuimavave scooted over from close range after a neat grubber kick for a much needed try (39), Sneyd kicking the two to leave the half-time score at 10-14 in favour of the visitors.

The second-half began with a Leigh try after another neat grubber from the influential Drinkwater fell to Reynolds who dived over under the sticks (45), before converting his own try to extend their lead further to 10-20.

In a similar theme to the first-half, FC struck back again as Albert Kelly pierced through the tiring Leigh defence, releasing the ball to the supporting Shaul who scored his second try of the night (49), Sneyd kicking the extras to narrow the margin: 16-20.

Another high kick from Drinkwater into the corner was knocked on by Michaels and Vea was quick to make it a brace of tries (54), Reynolds converting an excellent kick from out wide to re-establish the Centurions’ lead: 16-26.

A break by Danny Washbrook almost lead to an immediate reply from Hull but his pass off the ground to Jansin Turgut was judged forward by Referee Ben Thaler.

As the second half progressed, the game descended into a scrappy affair as both sides made mistakes.

A fantastic intercept by Albert Kelly almost led to a try in the last five minutes but a brilliant cover tackle by Dawson denied him.

However minutes later Kelly’s persistent paid off as he wrestled himself over the line (75), Sneyd converting to set up a gripping finale: 22-26.

Nonetheless, Leigh held on for a much-needed win as they condemned Hull to a second consecutive defeat.
