Hull FC 18-54 Salford Red Devils

Report

Round 8 of the Betfred Super League saw Hull FC take on Salford Red Devils at the KCOM as two of the league’s top four teams faced each other.

FC were looking to bounce back after surrendering a 22 – 4 lead against Warrington Wolves to draw 22 – 22, while Salford were looking to build on an impressive 22 – 14 win over St Helens.

First-half: Hull got off to a great start after a high bomb from Marc Sneyd was brilliantly palmed down by Mahe Fonua into the arms of Sika Manu, releasing the ball to Steve Michaels who scored in the corner (5), Sneyd adding the extras to make it 6 – 0.

A penalty would follow in kicking territory and Sneyd added a further 2 points in front of the sticks (8), extending the score to 8 – 0 for the Black & Whites.

The Red Devils responded quickly as Robert Lui scored from close range after a missed tackle (12), Michael Dobson kicking the conversion to leave the scoreline at 8 – 6.

Hull would go close again after a chipped Sneyd kick almost found Fetuli Talanoa in the corner but his palm-back was deemed forward.

The Red Devils quickly went back up the field via a penalty and a sweeping move out to the right found Greg Johnson in the corner to touch down (21), Dobson missing the kick as Salford took the lead for the first time in the game: 10 – 8.

The away side started to find their groove and added another try after quick hands inside found the onrunning Craig Kopczak to crash over (26), Dobson adding the kick to extend their lead to 8 – 16.

A series of Hull ill-discipline and Salford momentum lead to a fourth try for the away side as Craig Kopczak made it a quick-fire brace stumbling over the line (30), Gareth O’Brien taking over the kicking duties to make it 8 – 22.

The Red Devils piled on the misery in what resembled a rout as Junior S’au barged over in the left corner (33), O’Brien missing the kick out wide: 8 – 26.

The Black & White’s poor discipline would cost them as Marc Sneyd was sin-binned (35).

Salford punished Hull accordingly as they went down the left edge again, Greg Johnson managing to run in under the sticks from his wing (36), the conversion missed once again as Hull faced a steep hill to climb: 8 – 30.

Unbelievably Salford scored another in the dying embers of the first-half, working the ball to the opposite wing, allowing Justin Carney to barge over in the corner (40), O’Brien missing the kick as the hooter for half-time sounded: 8 – 34.

Hull FC came out needing a reaction and they got one early on after a strong run by Jansin Turgut, who released Jamie Shaul to go under the sticks (44), Jake Connor kicking the conversion in Sneyd’s enforced absence: 14 – 34.

Another try would follow for the Airlie Birds as great vision from Connor found Michaels in the corner from a kick (52), the returning Sneyd missing the conversion: 18 – 34.

Salford suffered a further blow as Justin Carney was sin binned after a team warning (57).

However, the comeback would be a temporary one for FC as Michael Dobson was sent over from close range (65) after some neat play, before converting his own try to extend the lead to 18 – 40.

The Airlie Birds’ night got worse as Jamie Shaul was sin binned for holding down after a Red Devils break (69).

Adding insult to injury, George Griffin was able to burst through tired FC defence from a Lui short-ball to score a try (72), O’Brien duly adding the extras: 18 – 48.

The away side wouldn’t be denied a 50-point haul as Ben Murdoch-Masila strolled in (78), O’Brien successfully converting to leave the final score at 54 – 18 in favour of the impressive Red Devils against a poor Hull outfit.
