Salford Red Devils picked up their first win of the 2017 Super League campaign after defeating Huddersfield Giants at the John Smith’s Stadium on Thursday.

The Giants, who won their opening Super League game at Widnes, made only one change for the visit of the Red Devils. Prop Sam Rapira replaced the injured Tom Symonds in the 19-man squad.

Salford added Josh Jones and Logan Tomkins to their squad after their opening loss at home to Wigan.

Gareth O’Brien got the visitors up and running from the kicking tee. Sebastine Ikahihifo gave away a penalty at the tackle when he impeded Greg Johnson.

Jermaine McGillvary reached 500 points for the Giants with his 125th try for the club which he scored in the 19th minute. The threat came down the left initially, but the offload from Ukuma Ta’ai to Ryan Hinchcliffe saw the ball floated to McGillvary down the right for a super try to the home side. Danny Brough was unable to convert.

Salford regained the lead in the 22nd minute courtesy of a Junior Sa’u try which came from very little. O’Brien held the defence up with a dummy before using soft hands in the pass to release Sa’u who ran a good angle to cross untouched. O’Brien converted for a four-point lead.

Ryan Brierley went for the ball at the tackle and was penalised by the referee. O’Brien opted for the chance to put two more points on the board before the break. His penalty attempt was successful, giving his side a six-point lead at the break.

An early 40-20 kick from Michael Dobson was brilliant. Salford had a good opportunity to make the first statement of the second half which they did when O’Brien ran a great line to cross for a try under the sticks. O’Brien added the extras to his own try, 4-16.

It looked like Greg Johnson had scored for Salford in the 46th minute. The video referee was asked to take a closer look but ruled no try. Johnson had a knee in touch as he stretched to score.

Alex Mellor brought the Giants right back into it when he scored in the 49th minute. Brough held up the defence well before passing to Mellor who burst through the line to score. Brough added the conversion to make it a six-point game.

Brough and Mellor linked up again two minutes later. Lee Gaskell was the man who made the initial break, but quick play from Brierley after the tackle got the ball to Brough who threw a pass to Mellor running another superb line for a try. Brough was unable to convert, 14-16.

O’Brien crossed for his second try of the game in the 63rd minute after throwing the dummy and crashing through the cover tackle of Mellor. He then converted to rub salt in the wound.

Ta’ai dotted down for the Giants with just over ten minutes to go, but the referee asked his colleague to take another look at a potential double movement. The video referee confirmed there was no double movement in the act of scoring. Brough then stepped up to make it a two-point game.

Salford then scored a try from nothing and it was Josh Jones who scored it. Jones ran into several defenders who all bounced off the Salford man while he stayed on his feet before barging his way over the line. O’Brien slotted the conversion, 20-28.

Carney broke up the field in the 77th minute before eventually being brought down, and the referee penalised the Giants at the tackle for the markers not being square. O’Brien lined up a shot at goal which he slotted.

An incredible performance from O’Brien saw Salford home in the end, but the game wasn’t settled until Jones’ score in the 75th minute.
