Huddersfield Giants 19-19 Wigan Warriors

Report

Huddersfield Giants and Wigan Warriors shared the spoils in a thrilling draw at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The Giants went into the break with a slender lead thanks to tries from Leroy Cudjoe and Lee Gaskell.

Tries from John Bateman and Liam Marshall saw the Warriors come back to within one point at the interval.

Huddersfield’s narrow one-point half-time lead was wiped out as Marshall grabbed his second try of the night.

Jermaine McGillvary’s try swung the game back in the Giants’ favour, before Williams’ drop goal ensured both sides settled for a point.

Cudjoe opened the scoring in the eighth minute when the Giants created space down the right. Martyn Ridyard converted and the hosts led, 6-0.

After back to back sets for the Giants, Danny Brough added a one-pointer in the 19th minute, 7-0.

Brough’s bouncing kick was chased down by Gaskell who scored in the 25th minute. Brough added the extras, 13-0.

Bateman was able to touch down under pressure for the Warriors’ opening try in the 30th minute. George Williams kicked the conversion, 13-6.

The Warriors were to score next through Marshall, who touched down a Williams grubber kick in the 34th minute. Williams converted from the left touchline, 13-12.

Marshall got his second of the game just two minutes into the second half after a sublime move on the left edge. Williams added the two from the touchline, 18-13.

McGillvary squeezed in at the corner in the 64th minute after back to back sets for the home side. Brough added the extras, 19-18.

With 12 minutes remaining, Williams levelled the game up with a drop goal from 30 metres out, 19-19.

Williams attempted another drop goal with four minutes remaining on the clock, this time from 60 metres out, but it was short.

A drop-goal attempt from Wigan’s Thomas Leuluai in the 79th minute drifted agonisingly wide.

Both teams had chances to win it, but the game finished all square.
