Report

NRL Premiers Cronulla Sharks opened their title defence with a 26-18 home defeat against a strong Brisbane Broncos outfit.

In front of 11,493 fans at Southern Cross Group Stadium, the visitors took their opportunities well with winger Jordan Kahu registering 14 points in the impressive win.

Brisbane opened the scoring as Kahu broke away down the right to register the first points of the new season, new captain Darius Boyd claiming an assist for a brilliant long pass.

The lead would last only six minutes as the premiers responded well, Luke Lewis and Jack Bird combining to set up full-back Gerard Beale for the four-pointer.

Wayne Bennett’s side edged in front again on the 20-minute mark as Kahu kicked a penalty goal, and the lead was stretched to eight before half-time as James Roberts touched down from Anthony Milford’s grubber kick.

Facing a 14-6 deficit, the Sharks needed a strong start to the second 40 but it was the visitors who struck as Milford found space, passed to Boyd, who got an offload for Corey Oates to finish out wide.

With Kahu on fire with the boot, Cronulla were 14 points adrift but a brilliant run from Chad Townsend mounted a comeback, as he raced clear before kicking for James Maloney to snatch up.

The Sharks started to build momentum and they were right back into it on the hour mark as Ricky Leutele powered through multiple Broncos players to cross on the left wing. Maloney making no mistake, 18-20 going into the final quarter.

Despite this, Brisbane knew a converted try would kill off the hosts and they got it with 10 to play as the half-back’s combined, Hunt finding a gap for Milford to race through and cross.

Cronulla wasted numerous chances in the final moments as they kicked off their title defence with a 26-18 home defeat to a clinical Brisbane.
