Catalans Dragons 10-18 Huddersfield Giants

Report

Huddersfield returned to action after having a week off by beating Catalans 18-10 in an error stricken opening game to the second day of Magic Weekend.

Catalans opened the scoring after just five minutes with a Julien Bousquet offload, freeing Richie Myler who did a one-two with Iain Thornley to score.

Bosquet had a try chalked off after Myler was adjudged to be offside from a kick. That proved costly as Lee Gaskell took a flat pass from Kruise Leeming to score. New loanee Martin Ridyard failed to convert to make it 6-4 to Catalans.

The game started to become a scrappy affair with both teams exchanging handling errors.

Vincent Duport was inches away from furthering Catalans lead but Jermaine McGillvary just did enough to put the big winger into touch. Again the Dragons wasted another opportunity as Luke Walsh tip-toed through the Giants’ defence but failed to pass to a team-mate.

A high tackle from Remi Casty gave Huddersfield the opportunity to level the game just before half time and Ridyard successfully converted to make it 6-6 at half time.

The second half started very similar to the first with mistakes and penalties aplenty.

Thornley grabbed the first points of the second half as he scored in the corner after the ball was swept to the left side. Walsh could not convert to make it 10-6.

Huddersfield almost replied when Leroy Cudjoe failed to gather a Ridyard cross-field kick.

Greg Bird looked to have scored again from a kick but the replays showed that he knocked the ball on against Gaskell and Ben Thaler, the video referee, disallowed the try.

With 8 minutes to go Sam Rapira got the all-important score, using his strength to bundle over the line underneath the sticks. Ridyard converted to take the Giants into the lead.

From the restart Aaron Murphy broke down the left side, Myler gave away a penalty to break up the attack, but from the resulting set Adam O’Brien scooted from dummy half to score. Ridyard got the conversion to put the game beyond doubt with only four minutes to go.

The win puts Rick Stone’s men just one point behind Catalans in ninth place and two points from a top eight spot.
