Castleford Tigers 24-22 Hull FC

Report

Round 20 of the Betfred Super League saw table-toppers Castleford Tigers take on third place Hull FC in a mouth-watering clash.

Both sides were looking to push on from impressive victories in the previous round.

It was the Airlie Birds who got off the mark first after a brilliant offload from Jake Connor allowed the in-form Mahe Fonua to dive over (5), Marc Sneyd missing the conversion to leave the scoreline at 0-4.

The Tigers responded after a mix-up in the FC defence was seized upon by the instinctive Luke Gale to score (12), the scrum-half converting his own try to leave the scoreline at 6-4.

Castleford extended their lead when Referee Chris Kendall awarded a penalty after Sika Manu was adjudged to be offside, Gale adding the two points (15) to extend the home side’s lead to 8-6.

The Tigers pressure continued and following a Video Referee decision, a try was awarded as Mike McMeeken touched down after Fetuli Talanoa was unable to deal with Luke Gale’s kick (22), the talented half-back kicking once again to make it 14 – 4.

Hull rallied but stern defence kept them out as both sides battled for possession.

It was Daryl Powell’s men who had the final say of the first-half as an attempted Jamie Shaul grubber was collected by Zak Hardaker, who ran 60 metres to touch down, Gale adding the extras to make it 20-4 as the hooter blew for half-time.

The second-half began with continued Castleford pressure and Hull conceded a penalty on their own line, the Tigers choosing to kick for goal and Gale continued his 100% record to extend the lead to 22-4 (51).

Lee Radford’s side continued to probe for an opening in an error-strewn game from both sides.

A controversial moment unfolded when Manu’s effort was chalked off by the Video Referee on the hour mark, following an alleged knock-on by Mark Minichiello in the build-up.

The Black and Whites finally got their reward as Albert Kelly released a pass out wide which eventually fell to Fonua who made it a brace of tries on the night in the corner (67), Sneyd converting to close the deficit to 22-10.

Cas extended their advantage after Josh Griffin was caught offside, Gale kicking from distance to make it 24-10 (69).

FC refused to wilt and a dummy by the elusive Jamie Shaul and subsequent offload to Talanoa, allowed the winger to barge over in the corner (71).

Sneyd expertly converted from out wide to narrow the gap to 24-16 as an impossible comeback became a distinct possibility.

Talanoa kept the dream alive diving over in the corner as the visitors moved the ball out wide to the left edge (76), Sneyd accurate with the boot again to set up a grand finale at 24-22.

FC desperately searched for a winning try but with time running out, they were unable to break out from their own half as Castleford hung on for a vital victory.
