Super League clubs have been alerted to the possible availability of ex-Wigan Warriors and England star Josh Charnley who quit the 13-man code to sign for Rugby Union side Sale sharks 12 months ago.
With the Sharks signing Marland Yarde from Harlequins earlier this week, some see Charnley as now surplus to requirements at the AJ Bell Stadium (home of the Sale Sharks).
Charnley would be said to favour a move back to his old club Wigan, but the Warriors have plenty of options on the wings with the likes of Joe Burgess, Liam Marshall and Dom Manfredi, who is expected to return from a long injury layoff early in the 2018 season.
Rumours are suggesting that Warrington lead the chase for the signature of 26-year-old Charnley.
The Chorley-born former England international burst onto the scene as a loan signing at Hull KR before establishing himself in the Warriors side, averaging a try a game from his 150 appearances in the Cherry and White.
Warrington are clear favourites to sign him as they have funds available and a move there would see Charnley remain in the North West.
If successful it would be another top quality signing for new Wire Coach Steve Price after landing Ben Murdoch-Masila from Salford and NRL star Tyrone Roberts from Gold Coast Titans.
Ironically, Charnley’s last appearance in the 13-man code was in the 2016 Grand Final where he scored the winning try against the Wire, he also scored a try in Wigan’s Grand final win over the Wolves in 2013.
If they can secure his signature, Wolves fans will be hoping for another Grand final winning display at the Theatre of Dreams in 11 months time.
