St Helens and Warrington interested in Ben Barba

Reports from 7 News Sydney suggest that Australian full-back Ben Barba is on his way to Super League after his departure from Rugby Union.

Barba was sacked by Cronulla Sharks for recreational drug use and was subsequently banned for 12 weeks by the NRL at the end of last season.

The 27-year-old signed with French RU side Toulon in January but after Mike Ford, the coach who signed him, was sacked last month, the club are overhauling their roster with Barba among those axed.

A spokesperson of the RFL stated in January that any drugs ban of a player in the NRL would be carried over into Super League, meaning Barba would have to wait until the Super 8’s to make his league debut in England.

St Helens and Warrington were the teams quoted as the likely destination by 7 News Chief League Reporter Josh Massoud, with the new second marquee player ruling catering for Barba’s wages.

Premiership Rugby Union club’s may also be interested in Barba, but if he has long-term goals of a return to the NRL, then a move back to league may be the preferred option for the former Bulldogs star.
